Five Common Swing Faults – And the One-Step Fix for Each
At J Whitaker Academy, we believe in keeping improvement simple. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or just getting started, small tweaks can make a big difference — and that’s why we teach with the One-Step Fix philosophy.
Here are five common swing faults we see every week — and the one simple adjustment you can make to fix each.
1. The Slice
What’s happening: The clubface is open at impact, sending the ball curving right (for right-handers).
One-Step Fix:
✅ Strengthen your grip.
Rotate both hands slightly to the right (clockwise on the grip). This helps square the clubface at impact and promotes a straighter flight.
2. The Hook
What’s happening: The clubface is too closed at impact, causing the ball to dive left.
One-Step Fix:
✅ Lighten your grip pressure.
If you’re holding too tight, especially with your right hand, it’s easy to over-rotate the club. Soften your grip to promote a smoother, more neutral release.
3. Topping the Ball
What’s happening: You’re lifting your head or straightening your legs, causing poor contact.
One-Step Fix:
✅ Focus on brushing the grass.
Rather than "hitting" the ball, think about brushing the ground through impact. This helps maintain posture and encourages solid contact.
4. Fat Shots
What’s happening: You hit the ground before the ball, losing distance and consistency.
One-Step Fix:
✅ Shift your weight forward.
At impact, aim to have more pressure on your lead foot (left foot for right-handers). This encourages a clean strike and compresses the ball properly.
5. Inconsistent Direction
What’s happening: You struggle to hit your target — pulls, pushes, and sprays.
One-Step Fix:
✅ Check your alignment.
Before swinging, lay a club on the ground parallel to your target line. Make sure your feet, hips, and shoulders are aligned with it. It’s simple but often overlooked.
