Beat the Heat: Summer Golf Practice Tips That Work

Summer brings longer days, faster fairways… and soaring temperatures. While it’s a great time to sharpen your game, practicing in the heat can be draining—both physically and mentally.

At J Whitaker Academy, we want you to get the most from your summer sessions without burning out. Here are our tried-and-tested tips to help you train smarter, stay cooler, and keep improving—even when the sun is blazing.

1. Practice Early (or Late)

Avoid the midday heat. Instead, schedule your range or short game sessions before 10am or after 6pm.

Not only is it cooler, but you’ll often find the course or practice area quieter—meaning better focus and less pressure.

2. Hydrate Like a Pro

This one sounds obvious—but most golfers don’t drink enough when they practice.

Bring a big bottle of water (or electrolyte mix) and sip every 15–20 minutes. Dehydration affects your energy, focus, and even swing mechanics.

Pro tip: If you’re thirsty, you’re already behind. Stay ahead.

3. Dress for Performance

Light, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabrics make a huge difference. Choose light colours, wear a hat or visor, and don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen.

Bonus: Keep a cool towel in your bag or car—you’ll thank yourself halfway through a session.

4. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity

In the heat, it's not about grinding for hours. It's about efficient, focused reps.

Try this:
- 20 balls on the range with a clear purpose (e.g., working on ball flight or tempo)
- 20 minutes on short game (pitch, chip, bunker variety)
- 20 minutes on putting (start line, speed control, pressure drills)

That’s a 1-hour power session that can do more than 3 hours of mindless ball-beating.

5. Mix in On-Course Practice

Instead of hitting 100 balls, head out late afternoon for 3 or 6 holes. Play multiple shots from the same spot, test different clubs, and simulate pressure situations. It’s fun, it’s effective—and it builds real golf skill.

6. Use Hot Days for Cool Gains

If it’s too hot to be outside, it’s the perfect time to:

- Review your stats or swing videos
- Work on mental game routines
- Do indoor drills (mirror work, putting gates, tempo trainers)

Improvement doesn’t stop when you leave the course.

Final Thought: Train Smart, Not Just Hard

Summer is a brilliant time to take your game to the next level—but only if you listen to your body, protect your energy, and practice with intent.
