Improving your golf swing is one of the fastest ways to lower your scores and gain confidence on the course. However, many golfers unknowingly develop bad habits that hold them back. As a PGA Professional at Oulton Hall Academy, I’ve helped countless golfers refine their swings and improve consistency. Here are five of the most common mistakes I see – and how you can fix them.
Your grip is the foundation of your swing. A poor grip can cause inconsistent ball striking, slicing, or hooking. Many golfers grip the club too tightly, restricting natural movement. A neutral grip, where both hands work together without excessive tension, promotes better control and accuracy.
A solid stance and correct posture are essential for a powerful and balanced swing. Standing too upright or leaning too far forward can cause mishits and loss of control. Ensure your feet are shoulder-width apart, knees slightly flexed, and weight evenly distributed. Your back should be straight, with a slight tilt from the hips.
Many amateur golfers rely too much on their arms to generate power, leading to weak and inconsistent shots. The key to a powerful swing is using your entire body, particularly your core and legs. A well-coordinated movement, starting from the lower body, helps transfer energy efficiently into the ball.
A rushed backswing often leads to poor ball striking and loss of control. The backswing should be smooth and controlled, setting you up for a strong downswing. Instead of trying to generate speed too early, focus on a steady tempo and proper weight transfer.
A complete follow-through ensures proper weight shift and clubface control. Many golfers stop their swing too early, leading to weak shots. A full follow-through, with your body facing the target and weight on your front foot, maximises both distance and accuracy.
